deathA traditional healer and his two assistants (twasa) were arrested for scamming a man out of 2.5 million rands.

According to EkuEhuleni police the Sangoma in question promised to heal a man’s sick child with a reasonable fee of 4 million.

Desparate to save his illing child the man paid the bogus sangoma 2.5 million in two installments and was to pay the rest soon.

Three Ugandan nationals were arrested in Honeydew, Roodepoort, on Friday. The man was aged 44, and the women were aged 25 and 30, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said.

The arrests took place after a man approached the EMPD after suspecting he was being swindled of money, when his son’s condition began deteriorating.

“A father, desperate for his child to be healed of a life-threatening ailment, was referred to a traditional healer who allegedly uses a python to heal patients,” Kgasago said.

“The parent claims that he was charged R4.5m for the treatment of his sick child.”

The man told police on Friday that he had already paid R2.5m in two instalments. The traditional healer had been waiting for the R2m balance the man still owed.

During the arrests, a 10 meter-long snake was confiscated and handed to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

The three would appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of theft under false pretences and contravention of the Animals Act, Kgasago said.
