Feminist Groups Argue Females To Boycott The “Pussy”

A new energy drink named “Pussy” started an outrage in South Africa. Female rights advocacy groups have called on women in the country to boycott the Pussy drink.

The drink is relatively new in South Africa but it has been on the market for 6 years in countries in Europe, where it has received mixed reactions from customers and different religious and feminist groups.

Groups like ANC Women’s league Agenda Feminist Media and Women’s Net are particularly irked by the name’s connotations, calling it derogatory, sexually explicit, sexist and degrading to women.

The drinks slogan is, “The drink’s pure. It’s your mind that’s the problem.”  Does not help the pussy’s case with these groups.

The Daily mail reports-The energy drink should not have entered the South African market under the label in the first place, and must be banned, said Professor Deevia Bhana of Agenda Feminist Media.

“We have to take a strong stance against this product and stop it. It is an insult, it’s offensive and it violates the very rights we have fought so hard for and continually fight over,” she said. “It is shameful that this product was allowed to come to our markets.”

The ANC Women’s League also took offence, saying its members would not be buying the beverage, but would be joining other groups in condemning it.

“Given the history we have just come from, and the efforts we’ve made to empower women in our communities, we feel this product has no place in our society with a name like that,” said league spokeswoman Khusela Sangoni.

Women’s Net, an NGO working for social change, agreed.

The reality was that the connotations of the word “pussy” are obvious to most people, and those connotations were generally offensive, sexually explicit and used as a derogatory term for women, said spokeswoman Eunice Mwesigwa.

“It is quite pathetic. One knows that people will go into a bar or a store and order ‘Pussy’ and find it amusing. It’s not, and it just adds to the public degrading of women and further, those who speak out about it being offensive, as being sensitive and over-reacting.”

Never thought so many women could be offended by Pussy. Would Drink the Pussy?
